Why a wool hat keeps your head cooler
Heat rises. In any sauna the air near the ceiling is the hottest in the room, and when you sit on the top bench your head is right in it. Your scalp has little natural protection, so your head often feels “done” long before the rest of your body has warmed through.
Thick felted wool is a good insulator. It slows the heat reaching your scalp, the same way a wool sweater slows the cold. Your head stays comfortable, so you can stay in for the full round, and your hair is spared the dry heat.
That's why felt hats have been part of Finnish sauna and Russian banya traditions for generations: not as a costume, but because they work.
